TERS
ADVANCED TIPS AND TRICKS OF INVESTMENT TAX MANAGEMENT TO ENHANCE CLIENT WEALTH ACCUMULATION AND RETIREMENT SECURITY

This course gives CPAs the tools and techniques they need to help their clients to implement tax-effective investment and financial planning strategies for successful wealth accumulation, enhanced retirement security, and maximized legacies. It discusses how to apply a host of specific investment and financial tax planning money management tips and tricks, both before and after retirement, to sculpt your clients strategies and tactics to our changing and dynamic tax, economic, and political environment. Discussions include what-if scenarios assessing the impact of potential tax rate and tax regime changes, including the impact of a national sales tax.

Major Topics:

  • Why current prospects for stocks are promising for the long term
  • What P/E ratios can tell us about future expected market returns and what the practical planning implications are for investors
  • How to measure after-tax returns and accumulations for investments ranging from those that are fully currently taxable (such as T-bills), to partially tax-deferred and tax-preferred (such as common stocks and mutual funds), to fully tax deferred (such as annuities), to deductible and fully tax deferred (such as qualified plans and IRAs), to nondeductible and fully tax free (such as Roth IRAs), to deductible and fully tax free (such as health savings accounts), and combinations thereof (such as real estate)
  • The rules and planning strategies for rollovers or conversions of regular IRAs and tax-qualified plans to Roth IRAs, including the tax consequences
  • How to use the recharacterization elections to minimize conversion tax costs
  • How to apply the true financial math of the recharacterization decision to varying tax and economic scenarios
  • The critical factors involved in the decision to make aftertax nondeductible elective deferrals to designated Roth accounts rather than before-tax deductible elective deferrals to traditional accounts in employer-sponsored 401(k), 403(b), 457, and/or SIMPLE plans
  • Applications and examples of a wide variety of investment and financial-planning tax analyses of wealth accumulation strategies and tactics

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain why current prospects for stocks are promising for the long term and what P/E ratios can tell us about future expected returns;
  • Determine how the timing, incidence, and nature of the tax on returns from various types of investment and accumulation vehicles affect an investors wealth accumulation
  • Assess when converting pension and/or IRA balances to Roth IRAs is feasible and appropriate
  • Apply the tax strategies available to maximize return on an after-tax basis to real world applications, including analyses of deferred-compensation, the real cost of premature distributions from qualified plans and IRAs, investments in mutual funds versus variable annuities, the true costs and benefits of life insurance, the aftertax gain or loss on home ownership, the real aftertax cost of refinancing, and a host of other applications

Designed For: CPAs who wish to acquire the knowledge and practical know-how to provide the advice, guidance, and tax analyses that their clients expect with respect to their investments both inside and outside of their tax-advantaged plans and with respect to all other financial planning decisions where the timing and incidence of taxation may be a critical factor in determining the optimal choice.
